What Is a Cold Transfer?

image

A cold transfer is a call transfer sent straight to another agent or queue with no introduction. The transferring agent releases the line and drops off immediately, so the receiving agent answers knowing nothing about the caller or their issue.

It is also called a blind or unattended transfer. The caller usually has to explain their situation again from the start.

How Does a Cold Transfer Work?

A cold transfer works in two steps: the agent selects the destination, then releases the call.

The agent chooses an extension, department, or queue and completes the transfer. The system routes the caller there and the original agent is disconnected. There is no consultation between agents and no handoff conversation.

If the destination is busy or unstaffed, the caller lands in a queue or voicemail with no one aware they were sent there.

What Is the Difference Between a Cold and Warm Transfer?

The difference is whether the receiving agent is briefed first. A warm transfer means the agent holds the caller, explains the situation to a colleague, then connects them. A cold transfer skips that step entirely.

When Is a Cold Transfer Appropriate?

A cold transfer is appropriate when the destination does not need context to help the caller.

That covers routing by category, such as sending a billing question to the billing queue where any agent can handle it. It covers calls that reached the wrong department entirely. It covers high-volume, low-complexity environments where briefing every transfer would create longer waits than it prevents.

Avoid it for escalations, active sales opportunities, and any caller who has already explained their problem once. In those cases the time saved is paid back through frustration and repeat contacts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a cold transfer the same as a blind transfer? Yes. The terms are interchangeable.

Does the caller know they are being transferred? They hear the agent say so, but not where they are going or who will answer.

What happens if nobody answers? The caller reaches a queue or voicemail. The original agent has no visibility into the outcome.

How Conquer Supports Call Transfers

Conquer handles transfers inside Salesforce, so even a cold transfer carries the customer record with it. The receiving rep sees the account, open cases, and full history on screen when the call connects, which removes most of the cost of skipping the briefing.

Because activity logging is automatic, both legs of the transfer stay on one record, and inbound routing sends callers to the right destination the first time so fewer transfers are needed at all.
