An AI SDR is software that performs sales development work autonomously, researching prospects, sending outreach, and handling replies without a rep driving each step. It’s marketed as a replacement for entry-level prospecting headcount rather than a tool that assists one.
How Does an AI SDR Work?
An AI SDR is given a target definition and a goal, then works a list without step-by-step instruction.
In practice, it pulls firmographic and intent data on accounts matching the criteria, drafts outreach personalized from what it found, sends across email and sometimes LinkedIn or text, then reads responses and either books a meeting, answers a question, or moves on.
Vendors differ mainly in how much of that runs unsupervised and where a human is required to approve.
What separates it from sales automation is decision-making. Automation executes a sequence you designed. An AI SDR decides what the sequence should be for each prospect, which is why it belongs in the same category as agentic AI rather than alongside cadence tooling.
Is an AI SDR the Same as an AI Sales Agent?
Not quite, though the terms are used interchangeably and often by the same vendors.
An AI sales agent is the broader label, covering any agentic system working a sales task. That includes research agents that brief reps before calls, agents that enrich and route inbound leads, and agents that draft follow-ups for approval. An AI SDR is the narrow case: an AI sales agent aimed specifically at top-of-funnel prospecting.
The distinction matters when buying. “AI sales agent” tells you almost nothing about what a product does unsupervised, so the question worth asking any vendor is which actions reach a prospect without a person seeing them first.
What Are the Limits of an AI SDR?
Three, and they’re the reason results vary so widely between teams.
Volume without permission is the most serious. An autonomous system sending at scale still sits under TCPA compliance for texts and calls, and consent obligations don’t relax because software made the decision. Deliverability is the practical version of the same problem, since unregistered or high-volume sending gets filtered before anyone reads it.
Then there’s what happens on a reply. An AI SDR handles a straightforward question well and a nuanced objection poorly, and the handoff to a human is where most deployments lose the thread.
Finally, the data. An AI SDR reasoning over thin or stale records produces confident, wrong personalization, which is worse than generic outreach because it signals carelessness rather than volume.
Where Conquer Fits
Conquer isn’t an AI SDR. It’s the execution layer human reps work in, which makes the relationship a division of labor rather than a competition.
Autonomous prospecting can generate interest at the top. What it can’t do is run the conversation once someone picks up, and that’s the part that happens on the phone, inside Salesforce, on a record that has to hold what was said.
Conquer’s dialer and texting run on the Salesforce platform itself, so calls, texts, and dispositions land on the record as they happen. Any agent, human or otherwise, is only as good as what it can read there.
