What Is Call Whisper?

image

Call whisper is a phone system feature that lets a supervisor speak to an agent during a live call without the customer hearing. The agent hears the coaching in real time and can act on it while the conversation continues.

The term also has a second meaning. Some systems use “whisper message” for a short automated announcement played to an agent before a call connects, telling them which campaign or queue the call came from. Both are covered below.

How Does Call Whisper Work?

Call whisper works by opening a one-way audio channel from the supervisor to the agent inside an active call.

The supervisor selects a live call from a dashboard and joins in whisper mode. Their audio reaches the agent only. The customer hears the agent as normal and has no indication a third person is on the line.

The supervisor can usually escalate from whisper to barge if the situation calls for speaking to both parties, or drop off silently once the agent is back on track.

Call Whisper vs Barge vs Monitor

The three supervisor modes differ in who can hear what.

Barge

Monitoring is silent observation, useful for scoring and quality review. Whisper coaches without disrupting the customer experience. Barge takes over the conversation and should be reserved for escalations.

When Should You Use Call Whisper?

Use call whisper when an agent needs help during a call and the customer should not know.

The clearest cases are new reps in their first weeks, where a supervisor can supply an answer instead of letting the rep guess. It also works for objection handling, when a prospect raises something the rep has not faced before, and for pricing or policy questions where the rep needs confirmation before committing.

Keep the guidance short. An agent cannot listen to a customer and a supervisor at the same time, so effective whispering is a few words, not a sentence.

What Is a Whisper Message?

A whisper message is a short recorded announcement played to the agent before a call connects, identifying the call’s source.

It typically states the campaign, queue, or ad the caller responded to, so the agent answers with the right context. The caller hears ringing during this and is unaware of it. This is standard in call tracking setups where one team handles calls from multiple sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the customer hear the whisper? No. Whisper audio reaches the agent only.

Is call whisper legal? Yes in most business contexts, though call monitoring and recording consent rules still apply and vary by jurisdiction.

Does whispering require special hardware? No. It is a software feature of most modern cloud phone systems.

How Conquer Supports Call Whisper

Conquer runs whisper coaching inside Salesforce, so a manager sees the deal, the account history, and the live conversation together before stepping in.

Guidance can be reinforced with battle cards on the rep’s screen, and every coached call feeds data-driven coaching so managers can track whether the intervention changed the outcome.
